GALLERY X

Gallery X elevates both emerging and established artists within the Portland community. Throughout the year, we curate a diverse range of open-call shows; each centered around themes designed to encourage artists to experiment and step beyond their comfort zones. While the ADX team curates most shows, we welcome proactive artists to propose fresh concepts for community involvement. We also offer gallery rentals for artists who want to curate their own shows.

Gallery X functions as an extension of ADX’s core mission, which revolves around breaking down barriers to artistic expression. Our open calls are operated on a zero-commission basis, and Gallery X firmly supports an artist-centric model where they can receive the entirety of the proceeds from their artwork.

ADX provides expertise, marketing, and promotions of the shows, coordination of food, beverages, and live music for First Fridays, and complete curation of the show. We have over 17.4k followers on Instagram and over 3000 contacts that receive our newsletter.

We kindly ask all participating artists to pay a nominal entry fee or substrate fee and to consider supporting the gallery by hosting gallery hours during the exhibition's duration, assisting with First Friday logistics, or any other activity that increases the visibility of the show by the general public.

We do regular calls to artists, including our Summer Skate Deck Show, Faux Show, Community Colab, Playing the Cards, and more! so make sure to add your name to our artist call list and follow us on instagram.

Gallery X is open to the public First Fridays from 5-9pm.

Gallery hours by appointment.

capitalism thrives on isolation. it keeps us alienated… from each other, from the land, from our own bodies, from the causes we care about & want to be part of. it forces us into competition, convincing us that survival is an individual pursuit rather than a collective effort. but we know better. i hope.⁣

everyone i talk with is craving connection. not the fleeting, surface-level kind that modern society markets to us, but something deeper, intentional, interwoven. we long for a sense of belonging that isn’t based on productivity or profit.⁣

May Gallery Show: Erin Robinson Grant: DE(Re)compose

Show opens: May 2nd, 2025, 5-9pm

Show runs: May 1st-23rd

Artist Statement: As a visual artist, I am interested in imagery that both embraces, but denies... entices yet disgusts.  I find, from personal observation and lived experience, that the vile and the exquisite are a cyclical continuum that encompasses all of human experience.  I strive to bring visual representation to not merely human events (sex, death, birth, consumption), but to reveal the ephemeral, un-mentionable quality of such experiences.

While it is true that these events are part of every being's existence, it would be wrong to assume the banality of such incidents.  From birth to death, these events mold the individualistic nature of every human.  However, it is also because of these shared experiences that one can identify with another outside of the self.  Sex, death, birth, and consumption are not exclusive events encapsulated in time, but temporal experiences that ebb and flow.  My artwork is a testament to this fact of existence in a cycle.

Life is not a binary experience.  One does not simply experience happy/sad or calm/angry.  Human experience is complex, subtle, and above all fleeting.  My work strives to embody this, and reflect this essence back upon the viewer.  By enacting the grotesque realities of life within the pictorial beauty of the hyper natural, I hope to encapsulate the transient idea of shared humanity.
